One Coke and 1 Hour Later....

Sure, it TASTES good, but did you ever wonder what happens inside your body after you gulp down that Pepsi?

According to the Nutrition Research Center, you pretty much experience this:

In The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.

20 minutes: Your blood sugar spikes, causing an insulin burst. Your liver responds to this by turning any sugar it can get its hands on into fat.

40 minutes: Caffeine absorption is complete. Your pupils dilate, your blood pressure rises, as a response your livers dumps more sugar into your bloodstream. The adenosine receptors in your brain are now blocked preventing drowsiness.

45 minutes: Your body ups your dopamine production stimulating the pleasure centers of your brain. This is physically the same way heroin works, by the way.

60 minutes: The phosphoric acid binds calcium, magnesium and zinc in your lower intestine, providing a further boost in metabolism. This is compounded by high doses of sugar and artificial sweeteners also increasing the urinary excretion of calcium.

Theorhetically, after 60 minutes the caffeine in your system is ready to 'exit' (read: you have to pee.) Then the sugar crash comes, making you either sluggish or irritable...or both!

I can tell you first hand that I usually DO have to pee 1 hour after my lunchtime soda...but I usually do NOT get irritable or sluggish. Of course, I like my job and my co-workers, so the idea of 1 large soda messing up my personality is not altogether likely.

If reading this makes you say "Maybe I'll just have an Iced Tea..." then maybe you've forgotten: Soda is Good! Just learn to smile more and you'll ignore the bio-chemistry that occurs every Pepsi...

Which soda do YOU find to be the coolest?

Scary - does it effect the results if you drink it with food versus drinking it on an empty stomach?
